My Poem for Chicks

Pinning up my long, wavy hair

Wearing frilly underwear

Making extra effort to say please and thank you

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Avoiding  ugly confrontations

Remembering to be polite

Not at all letting on that I feel blue

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Never, ever letting a swear word slip

Minding all my P's and Q's

Being kind to all, even those who have been untrue

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Smiling nicely at everyone I meet

Going out of my way to help them when they need

Caring about everyone, yes, YOU too

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Hiding when I am sad,

I'm not allowed to just be MAD,

Cause that would just be bad.

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Being sneered at by dudes at the gym

Being marginalized or given menial tasks

At work or school or anywhere at last!

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

Maybe I am strong enough to lift that box

Yes I can control my emotions

No, I don’t need help understanding that devotion

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

No, my favourite colour is not pink,

No, I do not like wearing make-up,

No, I do not need you to lift that box up.

Why?

Cause I'm a chick.

And I am strong all on my own.

Despite the fact that all this sucks,

I am proud to be a woman.

Super proud.

Extremely proud.

We are a kind of strong all on our own.
